Exhibition and gallery dates are rolling in, so it's time for an update on the JH calendar. 2010 was a busy year with all the exhibitions and events that have become regular features on John's calendar. Commissions though, always come as a welcome surprise, sometimes with deadlines that keep his brushes busy all hours. Lucky that the best technique for handling watercolour is - quickly! Visitors often raise an eyebrow at John's use of a hairdryer, since he has little 'on top' but, for drying his many layered washes, it's a great tool. Further to our 2010 news: The Faculty has now been awarded to St Peter's for the stained glass window which John was commissioned to design for our village church. He now looks forward to liasing with the craftsman. We've noticed the galleries are becoming less specialised, showing a wider range of media and styles. No doubt in times of economic strain, there's a desire to please all comers. I mention this to encourage you to ask to see what's in the stockroom! Interesting this year, to note the rise in popularity of small JH abstract paintings. In Dubai recently, John painted at the Majlis: two large, and one huge landscape, which were part of an exciting commission awarded to the gallery by a major bank in Abu Dhabi. If you happen to travel to Dubai, we recommend you visit this magical gallery in historic Bastakiya, near the Old Fort museum. Busy now with some intensive illustration work for a second book: 'Kazembe's New Kabudulu'. Due to go into print soon, it's a charity fundraiser for the Nkhudzi Bay Community Trust, supporting a lakeshore village in Malawi. The following year plan may be amended from time to time. For info see contacts below. A regularly updated collection of John's work is to be found at the galleries mentioned. You are also welcome to view ongoing work at our home. Hoping to see you at sometime through the year. With best wishes, Stella + John.
